Silver Cloud at Basseterre, St. Kitts in 2004
Imagine my surprise when I found that the Silver Shadow (slightly larger sister ship to Silver Cloud) is already at Basseterre, St. Kitts, at least according to Google Earth. We'll duplicate the experience next Tuesday and again 10 days later. St. Kitts is notable for the "Sugarcane Train" where purpose built quite luxurious double decker rail carriages carry cruise ship passengers around the island on a very rough narrow gage railbed. The train derailed when I took the train in 2006, but buses rescued the tourists in less than 20 minutes after the event. The tour operator was quite prepared. When I asked the train conductor if this happened frequently, she said, "Oh not very often, maybe only once or twice a week". We won't be taking the train this time.
